生于海宁硖石商会世家，本名徐章垿；幼读经书，入杭州府中学，与郁达夫同窗。
Born into a merchant house at Xiashi, Haining, he schooled at Hangzhou alongside Yu Dafu.
考入上海沪江大学，同年遵父母命与张幼仪成婚；翌年转北洋大学，并入北京大学法科。
He entered Hujiang University, married Zhang Youyi by family arrangement, then moved through Beiyang University to Peking University’s law school.
拜梁启超为师后赴美，入克拉克大学历史系，转哥伦比亚大学经济系；慕亚历山大·汉密尔顿，自字"志摩"。
Under Liang Qichao’s patronage he sailed to Clark University for history, then Columbia for economics, taking the pen name Zhimo from admiration for Alexander Hamilton.
1920年抛却美国博士之途赴英，先入伦敦政治经济学院，1921年得狄更生之引入剑桥大学国王学院为特别生，深受英国浪漫诗风洗礼；1922年归国，与胡适、陈源辈创新月社。

On 19 November 1931 his mail plane struck Kaishan hill in fog on the Nanjing–Beijing run; the poet of clouds was gone at thirty-four and buried at home in Xiashi.
