Joint Project by NAA、WAB and INES:

Preface

Establishment of "Anthropology of Calligraphy" Workshop and Recruitment of the First Art Field Project Participants

In recent years, calligraphy has gained increasing attention from the academic and artistic communities. This raises a crucial question that requires us to reconsider the relationship between calligraphy and contemporary life, as well as its content orientation. Anthropology, with its unique methodology, has been attempting to intervene in the study of calligraphy issues.

Ancient calligraphy has gradually declined in practicality, which means that regardless of the significant role calligraphy played in history for individuals and society, it has evidently lost its practical relevance today.

However, the wheels of modernization relentlessly bring changes and adjustments to the track of traditional culture. Calligraphy is facing such a predicament that the first step of modernization is to change the existing concepts and consider calligraphy as an art, inheriting and developing the "skill" of writing. Those who study this skill are called calligraphers—either as prominent inheritors or as experimental pioneers. The relationship between these two types of writers may be set aside for now, but they all believe in upholding one principle—calligraphy should adapt to the times. They all strive to create a "style" that represents the era, leaving behind grandness but lacking in subtlety. The complexity of the issue becomes apparent. Fortunately, calligraphy's narrative no longer relies solely on stylistic storytelling. With the introduction of phenomenology, sociology, anthropology, aesthetics, semiotics, and other methods of thought, the relationships constructed between the past and present, calligraphy and humanity, and so on, have gradually enriched the connotations of calligraphy.

Anthropology has a deep-rooted tradition of focusing on the culture and structure of human society. Guided by this notion, anthropological studies of art have inadvertently focused on the research of ancient cultural heritage, neglecting contemporary art. However, the relationship between humans and objects, particularly the construction of calligraphy, relies not on human structure but on a weakly centered relationship built between "resemblance" and "non-resemblance," "self" and "non-self," "ancient" and "modern." This may trigger anthropological rethinking of the "anthropocene" in anthropology.

When ancient calligraphy heritage, contemporary calligraphy art, and the art related to writing encounter anthropology, both sides need to move beyond the confines of museum-like or calligraphic anthropology  , then enter into a broader field. They should consider the relationships between the transformation of the past and present, types of art, and other aspects as a method of thought, aiming to promote the development of these disciplines.

Based on these considerations, the NAA Center andInstitute of New Epigraphic Study will conduct the "Anthropology of Calligraphy" workshop with the guidance of the Institute of Anthropology at Renmin University of China. We sincerely invite you to participate in and we will be glad to get your kind advice.  (Zhou Songlin, New Epigraphy Institute, June 2, 2023)
